FRESH TRACK FOR CPO

OPINION - Auckland Star. Tuesday August 18, 1987.

"It was interesting to see the twin-tower proposal submitted by the Kupe Group in the Star(August 11).

Such a proposal could well preserve the Chief Post Office building. The complete facade, and indeed the main banking chamber, could easily be converted to become a downtown rail terminal.

The Chief Post Office building has all the size, monumentality and position for a Central Railway Station. Aotea Square is large enough to absorb large rush-hour crowds of passengers, and is strategically placed for the central business district."

NOTE: The Britomart railway station (converted from the old Chief Post Office building) was completed in 2003.
